Is earwax bad?

No, earwax is completely normal and healthy. It protects the ear canal from dust, debris, and infection. Earwax usually moves out of the ear canal naturally through jaw movements such as talking and chewing. However, some people produce excessive wax. When this builds up and becomes impacted, it can cause temporary hearing loss, earache, tinnitus, a feeling of fullness, and blocked ears.

Is microsuction painful?

Most patients find microsuction comfortable and painless. You may hear a gentle suction sound during the procedure. If you have sensitive ears or suffer from tinnitus, you might notice it sounds slightly louder immediately afterwards, but this usually settles quickly.

How long does earwax removal take?

The appointment typically takes around 20–25 minutes. It may take slightly longer depending on the consistency of the wax, how impacted it is, and whether both ears need treatment.

Do I need a GP referral?

No referral is needed — you can book directly with us. If we identify any ear-related conditions, we will advise you to contact your GP for further assessment. We will also provide clear images of your ear to share with your GP if needed.

What should I expect at my appointment?

Your appointment will include a discussion about your hearing and ear history, examination using a video otoscope, viewing and recording images of your ear canal, and a discussion of findings and recommended next steps. You will be able to see clear images of your ears during the consultation.

I am an AHCS-registered Audiologist holding a BSc (Hons) in Audiology and a Master’s degree in Audiology. I currently work within the NHS audiology department and serve as a Clinical Lead for Vestibular services (Balance). I have over a decade of experience in both clinical practice and academia.

What is your cancellation policy?

We kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. As an independent service provider, late cancellations significantly impact our schedule. You can easily manage your booking by phone or email.

What should I avoid?

Accepted Answer

Please avoid inserting anything into your ears, including cotton buds (cotton swabs), hairpins, sharp objects, and ear candles. These can push wax deeper into the ear canal or cause injury.

Is microsuction safe if I have a history of ear infections?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Microsuction is considered safer than traditional ear syringing, particularly if you have a perforated eardrum, grommets, mastoid cavities, recurrent ear infections, or a complex ear history. Unlike ear syringing (where water is flushed into the ear), microsuction does not introduce water, which reduces the risk of infection and prevents wax from being pushed further into the ear canal.
